Speaker Announcement: Paul Coulton Returns to Over the Air

Paul CoultonIn 2008, Paul Coulton presented on Location-Aware Apps. In 2009, he returned to present on Mobile Games as Social Information Appliances. We’re very pleased to announced that Paul will be returning this year to “explore the far reaches of the mobile interaction continuum.”

Says Paul:

This talk will explore emerging possibilities for novel mobile interaction at both input and output which currently lie at the extremes of current practice. In terms of input I will discuss Brain Mobile Interaction, which offers the tantalizing prospect of controlling a phone with our mind in terms, and demonstrate what is currently possible and what potentially it may afford. In terms of output I will discuss AR which despite the current zeitgeist is still in its relative infancy. In particular I will present the possibilities for contextualized AR which will allow augmentation relative to actual objects or people in the field of view by dynamically mapping the environment rather that using vague projections relative to current position and direction or requiring the world to be physically augmented using fiducial markers.

Paul Coulton has over 15 years’ experience in mobile and founded the Mobile Radicals mobile experience design research group at Lancaster University. Paul also leads the Mobile Experiences Group for the Nokia Innovation Network which is an elite group of 20 universities around the world selected by Nokia .Paul’s long term relationship with Nokia has meant research projects encompass novel uses of the latest technologies such as RFID/NFC, cameras, GPS, 3-D accelerometers, and magnetometers in mobile phones and many of his projects have won a number of international awards for innovation.
